Sometimes you don't need a big adventure or a long trip away. Sometimes you just need a change of scenery, somewhere peaceful to spend a night, and a chance to wake up somewhere completely different.

That was exactly why I headed to South of Skye Motorhome Park at An Crubh on the Isle of Skye. I was travelling alone in my TentBox and had booked a single night simply for a change of scenery.

It turned out to be a lovely little escape, and it is somewhere I would happily stay again.

Getting to the Isle of Skye

The journey through the Highlands towards Skye is beautiful in its own right. The further west you travel, the more dramatic the scenery becomes, with mountains, lochs, open moorland and huge stretches of countryside.

One of the highlights is crossing the Skye Bridge, which connects the mainland with the Isle of Skye. There is something special about crossing the bridge and knowing you are heading onto the island.

Once across the bridge, the landscape continues to feel wild and remote, with rugged hills, open countryside and scattered settlements along the roads.

Even though this wasn't a long trip around Skye, the journey was part of what made the overnight stay feel like a proper escape.

Arriving at South of Skye Motorhome Park

One of my favourite things about this campsite was how easy the arrival process was.

There was no need to check in.

The barrier entry code was included in the booking confirmation, so I could simply arrive, enter the code and drive onto my pitch.

For a one-night stay, I really liked how straightforward this was. There was no reception to find and no complicated check-in process. I could just arrive and get settled into my TentBox.

Camping in a TentBox

I stayed at the site in my TentBox rather than a motorhome.

The campsite has space for around five pitches, which created a really peaceful atmosphere during my stay.

It didn't feel like a large, busy campsite with people constantly coming and going. Instead, it was quiet and relaxed, which was exactly what I wanted from a night away.

The small number of pitches is definitely one of the things I liked about the site.

The Views

The surroundings were probably my favourite part of the stay.

The site is surrounded by hills and large areas of open, grassy marshland, giving it a wonderfully isolated feel.

Although there are useful facilities nearby and Broadford is only around a 15-minute drive away, sitting at the campsite makes you feel as though you are somewhere much more remote on the Isle of Skye.

For me, that was exactly what I had been looking for. I wanted to get away from the usual surroundings for a night, and waking up in the TentBox surrounded by this landscape certainly provided that change of scenery.

Campsite Facilities

The facilities at the campsite are fairly simple, but everything I needed for a short stay was available.

Drinking water and bins were located close to the pitches, making them convenient to access.

The toilet and shower facilities were inside the main An Crubh building, around a three-minute walk from the pitches.

  • 1 toilet

With only a small number of pitches, the limited number of facilities wasn't an issue during my stay.

An Crubh Café, Shop, Deli and Post Office

The main building at An Crubh offers much more than just the campsite facilities.

There is a:

  • Café
  • Shop
  • Deli
  • Post Office

Having these facilities just a short walk from the campsite is a real bonus.

It meant that even though the campsite itself felt remote, there was somewhere nearby to get a coffee, pick up food or grab a few essentials without having to drive anywhere.

I thought this was particularly useful for such a small campsite.

Broadford

If you need more shops, food or supplies, Broadford is around a 15-minute drive away.

Broadford is one of the main settlements on Skye and has plenty of shops and places to eat.

It is useful to have somewhere like Broadford within easy driving distance because the campsite itself feels so peaceful and remote, while you are still close enough to the facilities you might need.

Things to Do Around South Skye

Although I only stayed for one night, there are plenty of places to explore around southern Skye if you are staying for longer.

Elgol

Elgol is a beautiful coastal location in southern Skye and is well worth visiting for the scenery alone.

The area has spectacular views towards the Cuillin mountains across the water. Boat trips from Elgol also provide an opportunity to explore the surrounding coastline and reach areas such as Loch Coruisk.

The Cuillin

The dramatic Cuillin mountains are one of the biggest attractions for anyone who enjoys walking and mountain adventures.

The Cuillin Ridge is particularly famous and is a serious undertaking for experienced mountaineers. However, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the incredible scenery without attempting the full ridge.

Bla Bheinn

For experienced hillwalkers, Bla Bheinn, also known as Blà Bheinn or Blaven, is another spectacular mountain to consider.

It is a challenging mountain walk and requires proper preparation, particularly because weather conditions on Skye can change quickly. The views from the mountain make it a popular objective for experienced walkers.

Fairy Pools

The famous Fairy Pools are further away from An Crubh but are one of Skye's best-known attractions.

The pools and waterfalls sit beneath the Cuillin mountains and provide a beautiful place to explore. They can become very busy, so visiting outside the busiest times can make for a more peaceful experience.

Why I Would Stay Again

The thing I liked most about South of Skye Motorhome Park was its simplicity.

I wasn't looking for a huge campsite with loads of entertainment and facilities. I wanted somewhere peaceful where I could park up my TentBox, enjoy the scenery and spend a night somewhere different.

That is exactly what I got.

With only around five pitches, the site felt quiet and peaceful. The surrounding hills and open grassy marshland gave it a remote Highland atmosphere, while the café, shop, deli and post office were only a short walk away.

Broadford was also close enough to make getting food or supplies easy if needed.

For a quick escape and a change of scenery, it worked really well.

My Verdict

I would definitely stay at South of Skye Motorhome Park at An Crubh again.

It is a relatively simple campsite, but I think that is part of its charm. The small number of pitches, peaceful surroundings and beautiful Highland landscape make it a lovely place to escape to for a night or two.

The easy arrival process was another big positive. Having the barrier code in the booking confirmation meant I could simply arrive and drive onto my pitch without needing to check in.

The facilities are basic, but having showers and a toilet a short walk away, along with the café, shop, deli and post office in the main building, gives you everything you need for a short stay.

Would I stay again? Yes.

If you're looking for a peaceful place to stay on Skye with a TentBox, campervan or motorhome, particularly if you prefer smaller campsites away from the busier tourist areas, I would definitely consider An Crubh.

For me, it was exactly what I wanted: one night, a different view, some peace and a little escape to Skye.
